Coral Calcium Facts & Fiction
for Osteoporosis
Coral calcium was discovered off the coast of Okinawa, Japan by a British journalist for the Guinness Book of World Records in 1979. He had set out to speak with a 115-year-old man named Shigechiyo Izumi, who reported that he and his neighbors were able to live long, healthy lives thanks to the water they were drinking. A team of researchers verified that the water they were drinking was, in fact, unique in that it contained a pH balance of 8.6 and closely resembled the mineral composition of the human skeleton and plasma. Entrepreneurs quickly harvested the dead coral, crunched it up and created a calcium supplement that offered to cure millions world wide. However, these somewhat unregulated supplements have raised more than one eyebrow, including the FDA’s.
The problem with the calcium from coral is that the market became “the next best thing” for those looking to make a quick buck. Miraculous cures can be tempting for entrepreneurs because they typically swell with an enormous tidal wave of publicity that can drive sales to epic proportions, making many people rich along the way and offering early retirement often before the public catches onto the treachery. There is no doubt that calcium supplements are good for you. This macro mineral is very prevalent in the human body, primarily in the bones and teeth but also found in blood plasma too. Responsible for more than 300 intercellular processes, calcium is essential for Osteoporosis prevention and overall bone health, not to mention regulating the body’s natural processes. Having a body packed full of nutrients, vitamins and minerals will undoubtedly create a healthier you, although “miracles” are far and few between.
According to www.coralcalcium-watchdog.com, their site claims, “Inexpensive coral calcium supplements are abundant, but it is not a bargain!” They reviewed 227 brands of calcium supplements and found 97% to be low or poor grade, with high sand content. In their study, the best products included Brazil Live by HL Distribution Co and True Blue by CFU Distribution Co. Products with average-caliber calcium includes Coral Calcium Supreme Plus (Sango Coral Calcium), Coral Calcium Daily (Health Treasures) and Acktiva (Progressive Health). But buyer beware, as average sellers also offer some of the lowest quality items in their product lines as well.
Skeptics argue that there are some hidden dangers in supplements that contain calcium from coral. While the industry is regulated within Japan, the export market still operates largely under the radar. Coral near Okinawa, Japan, is believed to contain large amounts of lead and mercury contamination, which may lead to health complications. This calcium should be properly refined before finding its way into a bottle, rather than simply being crushed into powder and sold. Yet, neither the dangers nor the benefits of this type of supplement have been sufficiently validated with research, so the debate continues.
