Why do we get hungry? I have friends who think they are hungry all the time, and others who sometimes forget to eat. I don’t believe anyone forgets to eat. Wouldn’t our bodies tell us we need to feed, and nourish it? So, why do we get hunger pains, and for most of us feel the need to eat.


Well, some people associate hunger as a sign that we’re low in energy, and so associate hunger with a requirement to refuel. It is true that if you don’t eat for long periods of time you can start to feel the physical effects of low blood sugar (Hypoglycemia) such as: feeling faint, headaches, and nausea, feeling clammy, irritability, heart palpitations, and more serious suffers such as diabetics can go into a coma if their sugar gets too low.


Why Does Hunger Happen?
Some people who research hunger believe that it is the stomach cells, and nerve cells in the intestines and stomach are designed to kick start the hunger process, as a protective measure to keep them nourished, before the blood sugar levels get too low. Hunger pains to warn us that we are getting low on essential nutrients, and implying that it would be a good idea to move toward foraging for some food. It is a chain of reaction that in its primary form is our hunger system. When we don’t eat the warning is spread out to more cells and nerves in the body, and they start to react with warnings of their own.

Now if this is true how does thirst play into our hunger system?
Thirst mimics many of these warning signs that hunger does headache, flushing, nausea, weakness, dry mouth, thirst, but it can also cause lack of appetite. At its worst like hypoglycemia it can cause coma, and death.

The Role Of TheHypothalamus

Our hypothalamus is the third link in our triad of hunger, and thirst. It has a lot to do with how much, and how little we eat. In the hypothalamus you will find two nerve centers. The fist center is our feeding stimulus that tells us to eat when we are hungry, the other center is the satiety center, and helps tell our body’s that we have filled ourselves enough, and not to overeat. Research as show when removal of either of these two centers an animal will grow beyond what is normal. The hypothalamus can be triggered by the sight of food, the smell of food, and even the thought of food.

Is GABA The Cure?

So here is where GABA or Gammaaminobutyric Acid comes into play. If the role of the hypothalamus is to help regulate our eating what happens when it is not working properly?
When we are stressed, or really busy, and our hypothalamus is working overtime, and the signals get crossed which in turn makes us want to eat more to feed the flight or fight response.

Researchers have been  studying how adding more GABA can help reduce our hunger, and help reset our hypothalamus, so that is functions properly. Our bodies’ internal mechanisms work together, to form a complicated and still not clearly understood chain of events and commands that are designed to keep us going at optimal capacity.

As research continues scientists are gaining more information on the intricate nero-circuitry and its role of maintaining and balancing our energy.

However, the research that is out there suggests that the events that lead up to weight gain, or weight loss may be very much impacted by low levels of GABA or Gammaaminobutyric Acid.
